IN BLOG 7 - ARTIST BRANDING, I have explained the detail of brand of my artist. The main audience should be interested in the following categories of Yellow Cordon's song 'The Lemonist'.

  1. Baroque pop - targeting people from around 25 to 35, middle to older generation

  2. Fashion clown identity and internet memes - targeting people from 16 to 25

  3. Political activist - 20 to 40 depends on the scale of influence

  4. Horror elements an sexual indication - age16+ audience

Political audience:

In general, the regular audiences for most television and print news outlets tend to be older than the public as a whole. Yet there are some notable exceptions. As was the case two years ago, The Colbert Report and The Daily Show have the youngest audiences of the 24 news sources tested: 43% of Colbert’s regular audience is younger than 30, as is 39% of the Daily Show’s regular viewers. Just 23% of the public is 18-to-29.

Examples of the Daily show (An American late-night talk and satirical news television program) and Colbert report are fusions of comedy and political criticism. I am interested in this approach, thus creating the persona 'Yellow Cordon'.

An example of racial offensive joke in the Colbert Report. The tag #CancelColbert has been

trending on Twitter since @ColbertReport's tweet of a derogatory line from his show late Thursday night, with some users calling for an apology. tweet came from a Colbert segment on the controversy surrounding the name of football team Washington Redskins, which many people consider offensive. Colbert was parodying team owner Dan Snyder's newest charity efforts directed at the Native-American community, and cited the fictitious "Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation" as a way to make his point.

I gained inspiration from how this event went viral on Tweeter. Our artist 'Yellow Cordon' uses similar satire on oriental identity.( Due to Yellow Cordon's Chinese identity, it is less offensive. However, this act of 'betraying the government' would still induce argument around Cordon's real intention of whether he is encouraging twisted values or free speech)

Case studies on audience targeting:

Ai Weiwei is a Chinese contemporary artist, documentarian, and activist. Ai grew up in the far northwest of China, where he lived under harsh conditions due to his father's exile. As an activist, he has been openly critical of the Chinese Government's stance on democracy and human rights. I set him as a model for Yellow Cordon, both politically and artistically.

Xiran Jay Zhao is a Canadian author, Internet personality, and cosplayer. Their[a] debut novel, Iron Widow, became a No. 1 New York Times Best Seller and won the 2021 BSFA Award for Best Book for Younger Readers. In September 2020, Zhao went viral, first on a Twitter thread followed by their first YouTube video, for their criticisms of Disney's live-action Mulan remake and its cultural inaccuracies. They credit their presence on the Internet as a self-described "Chinese history memer" for the success of Iron Widow, which was initially expected to only appeal to a niche audience. I wanted to simulate a similar process of 'getting viral' by displaying oriental memes and criticism on political regulation.

Fashion audience:

As there is indication of fashion elements on Yellow Cordon's outfit, there is possible advertisement and convergence with the fashion industry. For our audience, the main group is young and economically independent - high class people. Apart from the political message that is shared by most people in all classes of the society, the expensive and high culture bring specific audience group that would bring economic benefits to Cordon's brand.

The retrieve of Comedy

During the pandemic, more people watched comedy as a way to release pressure and forget about the hardship in reality. As I made Yellow Cordon's context background under the pandemic, a comedic vibe make it popular with mass audience taste.
