Our choice of song:

The Sound of Silence" (originally "The Sounds of Silence") is a song by American music duo Simon & Garfunkel, written by Paul Simon. The duo's studio audition of the song led to a record deal with Columbia Records, and the original acoustic version was recorded in March 1964 at Columbia Studios in New York City for their debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., released that October to disappointing sales.

We choose this video as our primary inspiration

Main elements we picked up:
  • -Black and white tone

  • -Fire with strong contrasting lighting

The production process:

What was successful and unsuccsessful?

  • We successfully built up a consistent tone with smooth transitions between footages, for example - the use of fade fits in the slow and steady rhythm. We were able to connect the footages with a sense of breathing, rather than using 'cut on beat' method that display an energitic detachment. Especially after the desaturation, the vibrant red and green may be a little bit too overwhelmingly up beat.

  • We were unable to fully eliminate the green background when it fuse with hair, so we tried to desaturate the green.

  • The costume of our protagonist could be designed in a fashion to indicate coldness, for example, coat with fur or leather.

  • A cold tone can be implemented to suggest melanchony and form contrast with the warm fire.
