Mind map:

Purpose of Genre:

Use of genre as a marketing tool: (Steve Neale)

1. Intertextual-relay builds a product’s narrative image

Public labels and critic fix the genre before it is released

2.Intertextual-relay guides audience readings:

Publicity builds expectation and guide the audience to adapt their viewing conditions as a direct result of these labels.

Blu-Ray Trailer of PSYCHO:

Genre: horror, mystery, thriller

Director: Alfred Hitchcock

Actors: Anthony Perkins-Norman Bates

Janet Leigh-Marion Crane

Context of the film:

Hitchcock was hampered by the Motion Picture Production Code of the 1930s -- a stringent set of guidelines films had to follow to be approved for viewing by the public. The Production Code mainly focused on censoring content related to sexuality and violence.

The Never before in a mainstream film had such graphic violence been depicted so intimately. But Psycho's enduring influence resonates well beyond one act of violence. Hitchcock broke a litany of conventions that drastically altered the course of cinematic history.

A series of quick cuts hides any contact between knife and flesh, making the sequence more gruesome in memory than actuality. But more than just the brutality of the act, it was a sinister violation of a private space.

This scene left an indelible mark on the collective psyche and paved the way for the violence of films like Bonnie and Clyde and the slasher genre, which includes Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

It's difficult to overstate just how radical it was to kill off the film's protagonist and biggest movie star only 45 minutes into the movie. The idea that the hero would not be victorious AND would die in the first act was unheard of at the time. (challenged Propp's theory of heroic character's narration)

Trailer of 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail'

Year:1975

Genre: Adventure, comedy, fantasy

Director: Terry Gilliam & Terry Jones

Actors: Graham Chapman-King Arthur

The trailer showcases a strong overall iconography that incorporates cultural codes from the medieval era. This medieval backdrop, associated with adventure and historical genres, often evokes a dark sense of tragedy. However, by employing elements of comedy and fantasy within its subgenre, it allows for swift tonal shifts (as Todorov stated) with a lower level of realism that generate an upbeat atmosphere. Furthermore, through the utilization of King Arthur's story (which the audience recognizes), the humorous performances and twisted scenes convey sarcasm effectively

OUR Genre:

We decided to do comedy, and the reasons are as follows:

We want to explore realistic lens art with a focus on storytelling. Since we lack professional skills in film production, we have decided to capture simple shots that showcase effective actor performances. We can heavily rely on the original clip for this purpose.
