Blog 10 - Editing

Updated: Mar 31

The editing of our video is challenging when it comes to applying special effects, such as subtitles, lighting, and color grading. Since our genre (comedy) is based on reality, the main focus of the editing should be timing and rhythm. They are responsible for delivering effective punchlines.

The learning process:

I specificly went and learned about the fusion of Davinci resolve.

The video is from content creator 'Media storm'

Colour is an essential element in evoking emotions, as our opening scene is highly abstract and involves multiple actions. A slight variation in tone can significantly alter the connotation of these actions. Given that many of our shots suffer from lighting issues, post-production is necessary to enhance the quality of the footage.

Step 1: Locating the clips

First of all, we narrowed down the versions of clips that we are going to use. We shot multiple versions of the opening and tried them in several sites with different actors involved.

Therefore, we decided to use the combination of both because they were shot on the same site and without significant content overlaps. We made changes to our storyboard during filming, resulting in an editing process outcome that is similar to our initial expectations.

The mainline - orders of the clips

The expected version of the story matched the outcome; however, there are still doubts about where to place the clips of Banana Man from shooting 2. Initially, we thought of making it a two-line narrative since the clips from shooting 2 imply symbolic meanings that correspond to the action in the main line (shooting 3).

The second (abstract story line)

Here is the order of shots that I imagined and planned out. Each scene in the main line has its parallel version (in another multiverse) in storyline 2. They share a similar tone but have a different visual language. For example, Louis in the main line is wearing a full suit, suggesting the classical portrayal of a high school boy. In contrast, in line two, even though he performs similar actions, his yellow banana cosplay is far more comical and clownish.

The actual direction

At the end, we decided to remove most of the clips from storyline 2 in order to enhance cohesion. Having too many clips would extend the length of the film opening, which is limited to only 2 minutes. A large number of cuts (frequent switching between storylines) would also increase the difficulty in editing and understanding. However, I still believed that there could be more elements of the banana man added to enrich the scene and create suspense with unexpected plots. This is one aspect where I believe we can improve upon our previous attempt. Additionally, this version follows a chronological order, which may be too "complete" for a comedy opening. Instead, I could utilize montages and abstract presentation to convey the tone rather than relying on a conventional plain narrative structure.

In this version, the parallel between the two lines turns into a juxtaposition. Now, storyline 2 acts only as a nonsensical clip that is completely separate from the mainline, except for the symbolic code of the banana. The calm action of eating the banana forms a strong contrast with the energetic "showing love" posture.

Colour grading

We have two essential color schemes: one is based on blue, which creates a cooler atmosphere, and the other is an orange and yellow filter. The cold set appears to evoke peace, while the warmer one indicates lust and desire. The first warm shot occurs when Louis starts eating the banana, symbolizing disequilibrium. Additionally, there are some parts of the shot that are overexposed.

Background music

We chose intensive electronic music to highlight the comedic effect, while the BGM "Demonic Corruption" (DOOM) forms a cohesive bond with the warm shot, presenting masculinity. Meanwhile, Danny with fake hair parodies blond female characters in classical Hollywood films. This suits the state of the main characters while still providing some unexpectedness.

However, initially we considered using classical music with tension-building elements to create a juxtaposition of classic and postmodern expressions. The classical piece would bring an epic feel while the actual image depicts complete randomness and hilarious acting, resulting in a strange elevation that could lead to an alternative route. Additionally, editing based on the music's rhyme could introduce more abstract orders, reducing the amount of solid information provided and leaving space for the audience to imagine the rest of the film.
